I did not do any quests or combat today, I just played the level 20 "Tourist" and went for a run around the world to see what it was like. I found it to be a rich varied world that Elder Scrolls fans may compare to having the whole of Tamriel to play in, instead of just Morrowind, just Skyrim or just Cyrodiil.
I never saw a single troll all weekend, not that I expected too. There is a myth that every MMO is full of Assholes but the truth is, single player game forums tend to be worse for than MMOs where offending somebody could result in an axe being planted in your head.
I took some holiday snaps during my tour as I visited most of the races home areas, the frame rates went as low as 5fps in some areas on my Quad Core 2.4 Intel CPU/Nvidia 8800 GT 1 gig graphics card and 4 gig of system ram computer.
Which means if the game stays like this, a Quad Core 2.4 GHZ cpu may be too slow for Guild Wars 2 simply because of the number of people on the servers. Tweaking the graphics only got me 3 to 5 fps back so its got very little to do with the graphics and more to do with how busy the servers are.
I think that last stress test they ran led to changes that allowed far more in to the servers than many computers can cope with. This means world v world games will be a slide show for many and thus not worth playing.
I do have some concerns about this because they seem to have reduced the number of servers for Europe, taking away Sharps Corner in order to make the remaining ones very busy, so most where high populations and would have had the same problem.
I expect the initial release will be a slide slow nightmare for that reason.
The worlds them selves where great, I travelled quite far and despite the low FPS, it was fun. The worlds slowly changed from one look in to another, keeping the change over natural and not sudden. The home locations looked great too, the cities are huge and very impressive.
I may make a Guild Wars 2 Tourist video at some point that contains just the screenshots I took so you can see it.
Looking forward to playing the game properly in my own time now, without having to rush it because its only a beta weekend. I must say I enjoyed the personal story elements too. In fact they are the reason I stopped playing early today. I went to continue making my own quests for Skyrim now.
Playing quests in Guildwars 2 whilst wanting to get on with my modding was painful, if I play a game for too long my urge to mod takes over and I must stop and do some modding.
Which is what I am going to do for the rest of the day.
Telvanni Hall, here I come.
