One of the inspirations for the Wizards of Winterhold was the Dragon Age Deep Roads and the Dwarven Thargs (underground cities and settlements). They added a certain mythical mystery to the whole Dwarven race that I wanted to recapture in the Wizards of Winterhold.
I had already decided to make some forts of various sizes through out the Dark Roads in WOW, but I had 1 idea for a Tharg style Dwemer city that I wanted to implement in WOW as early as possible. My first stab at designing a Dwemer Fort for Wow was so boring I did not want to finish it so I deleted the boring part and started again.
The second attempt looked great but the frame rate dropped to just above 20 before I even started decorating the level, so I scrapped that and rebuilt it in a slightly different way.
On my third attempt I got much better results and over 60 frames per second, which is perfect for a basic level awaiting decorating. It also feels like an exciting level to explore too so I find my self having to force me self to stop and take a break.
This new Dwarven Tharg which I call a fort, is to be a combat level with various clues and other things to find regarding the fate of the forts former inhabitants. It stands along the darkroads leading back in to morrowind and for centuries has blocked the path to Skyrim and prevented even the Falmer from traveling freely along it.
Now you "the player" fight your way through the Darkroads to the fort. No living soul has traveled through the fort and lived for centuries. And the fate of those who once lived there has been forgotten over time. By the time of the disappearance of the Dwemers, this fort had already been forgotten. It even the predates the Falmer revolt.
At least that is the background story I am thinking about for this part of the mod.
These forts are important to the story of the Deep Roads, so when you stumble across one of these special locations be sure to explore it fully.
