Cataxu on Twitter was asking about placement of doors when using the ESM + Esp Navmesh trick to get around the fact Skyrims creation kit cannot make working levels just yet due to the Navmesh Bug. Clearly its hard to answer that question on Twitter so I thought I would answer it here instead.
The esm has to hold the navmesh and levels if the esp edits the navmesh at all, it will suffer from the Navmesh bug all over again. So we use a little tricky, we design the level as an esp, placing doors but not linking them. Placing furniture and other stuff then we convert the file to an esm.
Next we load up the esm in the editor and start editing our levels objects such as doors, furniture so they do what we want them to do, eg link levels, respawn chest contents or not etc. Then we add our NPCs and save it as an esp file that requires the esm.
As long as we do not edit the navmesh from the esp we are fine. Also all quests, scripts, NPCs and interactive objects should always be added via the esp file. So if you wish you can use the ESP to delete items placed in the ESM and replace them with items in the esp. Effectively modding your own esm file to solve the problem.
It is a massive pain in the butt and Steam does not support this workaround at all, so steam currently does not support mods with working levels because that is the only way to get a working mod with new levels in it. All other level based mods will suffer from the navmesh bug at some point and will break.
