I was wondering what your favorite hold or city (for you urban-types) in Skyrim is. For a rather small province there is a lot of diversity there. I'm a Whiterun fan myself, with the Rift and the Reach tying for second.

This is actually pretty hard to choose. From just a city standpoint, I think Whiterun is probably my favorite. I really like the scenery in the Rift with all the aspens (particularly the area around Ivarstead). Windhelm is a little too cold, but its a cool city. Solitude is impressive, but in a cool place to visit kind of way. I really dislike Markarth. Its a cool looking place and all, but the whole built-into-the-mountain thing gives it a kind of entrapment feeling, especially when combine with the way it forces you to start that forsworn prison quest. I try to avoid it like the plague.

Yes.. Very hard to choose. My favourite is Riften bu a really close second is Solitude... Maybe its because of the Thieves Guild.. Maybe its because of the quests.... Both seem more "alive".... (kinda ironic for Solitude actually.. I am after all the Listener... ::grin:: )

Whiterun because of the skyforge.

I am still playing Guild Wars 2. I loved playing Oblivion. I enjoy playing Skyrim.
Guild Wars 2, Oblivion, Dragon Age Origins and then Skyrim. In that order. I think that covers everything important?

Whiterun because it's the best developed city. It really feels that Beth wanted to make a great first impression with it. The other holds are... good but I don't see them as well done as Whiterun.

Whiterun is well done, and Riverwood is simply picturesque. Riften also has a LOT of go and gather quests (fire salts for the smith, ice wraith bits for the food vendor, the jeweler's various needs, then there is the cute but creepy alchemist's assistant...). Marthal could have used a bit more development--there is not even a general store there. Markarth is okay as far as I am concerned, but more forsworn quests would have been nice. I am from the tropics, or nearly so, so snow and mountains do not make that much sense to me. Morrowind's landscape was more to my liking.

I did have to LOL when I went to Falkreath, though, and the first jarl quest was for a beer. :D

Whiterun for me, for its land and the city is the most alive one. If I would become the king of Skyrim, I would make this city as the capital.

When I saw that about choice in the poll about an eventual boat to Ebonheart, I had to choose it! Because I love morrowind and I miss Vvardenfell!

Markath because its totally different to everywhere else. The crazy staircases and huge waterfalls give it a unique and epic feel. I like Whiterun too but it reminds me too much of Edoras from LOTR.

Only problem with Markath is some bugs and not a lot of quests but I voted on artistic merit.

Though I wanted to choose Whiterun (and I wanted to because it looks a lot like Edoras in Rohan), I had to choose Markarth because I've always loved the Dwemer and to get to walk in what is essentially a living, breathing, Dwemer ruin was a somewhat surreal... until the Forsworn questline came and ruined it for me...

@Kallis Agea: Well I like Edoras too but I don't like it in my TES games. Rivendell on the other hand I like a lot so I'm willing to throw correct lore out of the window, of course its finding the free space in Skyrim to put it. :)

honestly, i find that most of the city's seem to lack an abundance of shops and, theres only about three stools outside, i mean what sort of a market place is three stools. Also on a side note i found when stealing from the city's, is it just me or does everyone seem extremely poor, even the jaals?

My personal favorite is Riften. I do love seedy locations, and the scenery is actually very nice.

But close favorites are definitely Markarth and Solitude. Markarth has some nice architecture and I do love the Dwemer so! And Solitude is the closest thing to a more Imperial area.

Funnily enough, on an off note, I'm disappointed with the Imperial presence in Skyrim, mainly because of the lore regarding the Thalmor.

Whiterun. That was my first base of operations and now has sort of a familiar feel to it.

The land surrounding Whiterun is nice too. How on earth does Balgruuf permit the Skooma dealers to have a camp outside the city walls to the north... right under Dragonsreach. All he has to do is dangle a basket out his window to collect his "take".

And who killed the Guards at the tower to the northeast too? I never found out who did that. Mind you they probably laughed at Cicero cos that merry Fool is just up the road...

Windhelm for me- the city that most feels like a Skyrim city should. I love the light cast on Candlehearth Hall in the evening and the view of the city from the Talos shrine high above it. The marsh areas to the south remind me of Morrowind.

I see Whiterun is perennially popular, to me it is like the Mayberry of Skyrim and too much like Oblivion. I do like the wood totems and doorways.

I voted for Whiterun simply because of Breezehome and its location right next to Warmaidens and a full set of blacksmithing tools. You have the Drunken Huntsman right across the street. Plus up the street you have a General merchant and Apothocary shops. It's all located in one small area and easy to get to.

I like Riften but the Apothocary on the lower level kills it for me. Plus the house in Riften is tiny.

Solitude would be my first choice except for the fact everything is so spread out. Solitude is the one city that does not look like its ready to fall down if you look at it cross eyed.

I use the Breezehime Fully Upgradable mod by Sku11MOnkey. With this mod Breeze home has everything I need for crafting right inside and its easy to navigate. If I could pick up Breezehome and move it I think I would find a nice plot of land inside Riverwood to place it on.
